Key facts

  • Open to undergraduate students majoring in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field of education.
  • Gain valuable industry experience and build connections in South Australia’s defence sector.
  • Students will receive up to $7,000 to undertake an industry nominated Honours project.


Students must be:

  • an undergraduate
  • an Australian Permanent Resident or an Australian citizen
  • undertaking an Honours project in their degree
  • in their third year or above of study at a South Australian University and in one of the nominated fields of education (PDF)
  • high achievers with an excellent undergraduate academic record
  • of good character and have leadership potential
  • able to maintain satisfactory academic progress and full time study, and meet the eligibility criteria throughout the period of the scholarship.


How to apply

  • Review the industry nominated projects:
  • Choose a maximum of three preferences and select a maximum of three preferences.
  • Complete the application form, which will be submitted to the Department of State Development.
  • The application involves answering questions and uploading a resume, two reference letters, an academic transcript and a signed faculty approval form (DOCX).
  • An assessment panel will short list applications, which consist of members from the Playford Trust, Defence Teaming Centre and Defence SA.
  • Industry partners will make the final selection based on the shortlist of candidates.
  • The final details of the Honours project will be negotiated between the student, the relevant industry partner and the university. If a student declines the project, it will be offered to the next ranked student.
  • Once selected, the successful student will be asked to sign an agreement with the Department of State Development and the Playford Trust. Students may also be required to sign a separate agreement with their host employer.
  • You may also be required to undertake a police check prior to commencing your project.

About the program

The Defence Honours Scholarship Program enables companies to host students undertaking an industry nominated Honours project, enabling students to gain work experience in defence or defence related industries.

The Defence and Honours Scholarship Program is delivered by the Department of State Development in partnership with the Playford Memorial Trust and the Defence Teaming Centre. The program enables industry partners to tap into new ideas and insight from students who are learning cutting edge technologies and applications.
